Wanting to Change the Generational Curse

I am still amazed at how our parents can come to a country with nothing yet, give their kids everything. Hearing parents, any immigrant’s or refugees’ story is such a blessing because not all make it across the border or their country that is no longer safe to live in. One day, there will be a podcast that involves and shares people’s stories. Everyone has a story!

I take pride in being a daughter of immigrants. I am proud to say I am a first generation graduate, Ecuadorian and the daughter of immigrants. However, no one prepared us for the heavy weight on our shoulders to bring our families out of that generational curse. The amount of pressure is so high that makes kids so lost in who they want to become. I was one of them. I witnessed a few parents just depend on their kids to take them out of the situation they are in and some parents try to seek ways on changing themselves for the better. There is this generational curse that involves our families getting a job that’s 9-5 and repeat. Our schools didn’t educate us on financial freedom, the importance of finances, and credit.

A lot of us are taught to go to college, get a degree and land a job. Nobody told us how hard it would be to get that job. Did you know only a small percentage in the USA teaches people about finances? About businesses?

Also, not a lot of families know about EOF programs or TRiO Programs and I thank my 8th Grade counselor teacher for calling all our parents in joining a TRiO Program. They were the only way how I knew to get into college.

We, kids all have a dream of getting out of the generational curse, but it is hard when not everybody believes you or supports you. Strangers or internet friends are better supporters than your friends and that is crazy! But, don’t let that get to you. Just keep going on whichever journey you are in. If you want to get your own business, go for it! Just make sure you are having some guidance (such as SBA, SCORE, SBDC, etc.) because there is free information out there that people do not take. Please Search!

If your parents do not believe in you, please do not let that affect you. Sometimes, parents can carry negative energy and if you allow it to enter your mind, you will also be a ball of negative energy and you will not grow. It is hard. I cannot say move out and get your own place but if you do live with your parents and have your own room, try to create your room as your safe place. Have a motivational poster on your ceiling, create a work station and have anything else that’ll expand your mind and make you feel positive! If there are people who are your friends and are thinking negatively of your goals and dreams, remove them. You do not need any negativity in your life.

I am 24 years old and I am still trying to find ways in breaking the generational curse. Creating this blog and going back into my vlogging era is so heartwarming. These are my hobbies! I went to college and got my degree in Graphic Arts because I needed something to home my creative mind. My parents were my motivators, I only went to college to show them how much I love them and wanted to be that first-generation daughter to graduate from college. Thanks to them, I met great people, learned so much information, and met professors who cared more than the educational system. It was kind of hard to get them to understand that just because you have a degree, doesn’t mean you’ll immediately get a high-paying job and be set for life.

That diploma means so much but during the last two years, it’s just a piece of paper for me (that’s my opinion, I still don’t have my diploma due to a school balance, I graduated in 2020). Maybe it’ll change once I have it in hand, but for now, it’s just a piece of paper. It’s what you do after that matters the most. Like yes, it’s great and all to have your diploma but don’t let that overwhelm you. If you don’t want to go to college, don’t. There’s so many alternatives. If you need advice or anything, I am here. If you need college advice, my dad is the founder of a non-profit organization called “La Via Al Exito” that is focused on educational resources. However, college is not the only answer to breaking a generational curse! When you feel happy at what you do, learn more about other habits, learn to gain knowledge, have financial freedom, and are truly happy, you are a step closer to breaking the generational curse!

You are not alone! We are all in this together.

Reminder:

be your own best friend. talk to yourself. say things out loud. get fresh air. start that thing you’ve been putting off for so long. just start. but, start when you feel ready! or have someone give you that push. anything you do is up to you, as long as you are happy!
